Because everyone deserves dessert...
Cakes for Cause is a non-profit organization that develops social enterprises to provide job-training for vulnerable youth in our communities. By combining independent living with vocational and job readiness services in a small business environment, Cakes for Cause programs provides training to a corps of young people to enter the workforce or post-secondary education with the necessary skills that enable them to be more self-sufficient and less reliant on the social services network as adults.
In Frederick Maryland, Cakes for Cause operates Moxie Bakery & Café a 24-seat restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, brunch, desserts and coffee, and small-scale catering. We are an independent non-profit and partner with other social service agencies to work on housing, education, and money management skills so that the children in our programs can truly become self-sufficient. By operating commercially viable small businesses, our program generates funding to support the non-profit mission, thus becoming less reliant on state, federal, or foundation funds to provide services.
Our apprentices go through an intensive 6-month curriculum that teaches basic bakery skills alongside restaurant service skills in an energetic and fast-paced café that serves the community at large. More importantly, the role of Cakes for Cause is to help vulnerable youth internalize change—in their surroundings, through their employment opportunities, and within themselves. |
